The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton, with its ladder frame, live rear axle, leaf springs, and manual transmission, screams perfection in the minds of some U.S. pickup truck purchasers. It is also available in single cab and “Club cab” configurations in addition to the double cab. With Mitsubishi virtually nonexistent in the United States, a pickup truck like the Triton would tremendously assist the Diamond Star brand. Unfortunately, it is not intended for this hemisphere.
The Triton would restore Mitsubishi’s relevance in the United States. After such a lackluster effort to rebrand itself for EVs with the i-MiEV and then the poor reception of the Eclipse Cross, the Diamond Star is on the verge of irrelevance and needs something to bring it back. With the small and midsize pickup truck market as popular as it is, the Triton could help Mitsubishi reclaim its former glory (especially if they adopt the Mighty Max or the Raider moniker). We will argue why it would be a wise decision.

A “proper” truck.
The rear axle of the Triton is leaf-sprung and live. Many truck devotees consider it a “proper truck” without ever having tried another. It also indicates that the Triton will not base on a CUV platform but rather a “proper” RWD platform. Many of these “proper truck” features make the Triton ideal as a work truck or for transporting overland equipment and would suit it well on the U.S. market.

It Comes With A Six-Speed Manual
It is also not “compromised” by having only an automatic transmission, as with many other midsize pickups. You can still row your gears even with 4WD and the most potent variant of the 2.4-liter turbodiesel 4N16 I-4 engine (204 hp and 346.7 lb-ft of torque between 1,500 and 2,800 rpm). The intriguing feature of the six-speed transmission is the “shift by wire” shifter. No direct connection exists between the selector stalk and communication. It would be fascinating to observe how effectively that functions. In addition to a dial selector for remote 4WD engagement, there are multiple modes and the ability to secure the center differential and low gearing. In addition to being a full-time AWD system and not just a conventional 4WD, it also has a 2WD function for improved fuel economy. Again, many items would sell well to an American customer.

Functionality
The bed height of the Triton is just 32.28 inches, while the bumper corners provide ample space and strength for stepping. The version with an automatic transmission can accommodate tablets in its center console, while both messages can accommodate four 600 mL beverages in their cupholders. The glove compartment, smartphone holder, and tiny storage compartments are also designed to adapt and operate while wearing gloves. In addition to USB A and C adapters, a wireless charger will be located at the bottom of the central instrument panel. The Triton also has advanced ADAS features, such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning with lane change help, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Going Beast Mode
Even Mitsubishi produced a model that would appeal to American consumers. The Triton Beast Mode concept adds contrasting fender flares, a sports bar, a tonneau liner, and roof rails to the four-door version. Mitsubishi offers many of the same accouterments for the Triton, including a factory bed liner, despite the Triton being a concept vehicle.
In addition, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will compete in Cross Country Rallies throughout Asia with the Triton. A Ralliart version of the Triton in the United States would demonstrate that it has the same off-road capabilities as the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado in their respective off-road racing programs. It would be fantastic if it came with the same Work Crag T-Grabic II wheels and some carbon body components.
We also question if the Delica D:5 support van wouldn’t be effective as a support vehicle. But that’s likely just us and our slightly odd fixation on the small off-roading car.

North America Should Get The Triton
The 2024 Mitsubishi Triton is currently on sale in Thailand and will soon introduce to the ASEAN and Oceania markets. It includes Japan, which has not occurred in the past 12 years. It has been over 14 years since a Mitsubishi pickup vehicle was available in the United States; the time has come for its return. The new Triton would be ideal for reviving the Diamond Star in North America.
